This is Chapter 40 of the Ouran High School Host Club manga series.

Synopsis[]

Michelle leaves. Kyoya informs the others at the host club that Tamaki is out sick with a cold. The female patrons are upset and conjecture that it is due to Michelle leaving. They collectively recall his weird behavior over the past few days: he put 30 spoons of sugar in his tea, wrote a senryu, and did research on parent-child relationships. Renge mentions that yesterday, Tamaki pulled Mori behind the PE building.

A flashback shows Tamaki asking Mori whether he ever thought about kissing Honey and Mori saying no. Renge concludes that Tamaki has feelings for Mori, which prompts the jealous wrath of two of the girls. Meanwhile, Tamaki is lying in bed having a crisis about his feelings for Haruhi, who he almost kissed. Since he sees himself as a father figure to the club, he thinks that having feelings for her makes him a pervert. (The reason why he asked Mori whether he ever felt like kissing Honey was because he thinks however Mori feels toward Honey is how a father is supposed to feel toward his child).

Tamaki feels like he is dying and thrashes around melodramatically. Shima Maezono, the housekeeper, reminds him that the doctor has already been there and if he follows the doctor's instructions, he should get better. The maids are taking care of his dog, Antoinette, and the staff is there to cater to his every need while he is bedridden. However, he tells them that he can take care of himself. They think he is acting like a tragic hero and start trying to heal him from what they believe is a very serious illness. The host club, minus Haruhi, suddenly shows up to his room, making him emotional.

They help him change clothes. Haruhi then enters while he is mostly undressed. She runs out. Tamaki accuses them of having done that on purpose and collapses melodramatically. While he lies on the bed, the Morinozuka brothers and Honey find his categorized book of snack wrappers. Meanwhile, Haruhi and Mori are looking at Tamaki's toy prize collection, which mesmerizes Mori, leading the brothers to speculate whether More has “a fetish for small things” which influences his interactions with Honey and Haruhi.

Tamaki points out that it seems the others have forgotten why they came there in the first place. Haruhi tells him that she used to collect the Mika-chan's home series and that seeing it is nostalgic. Seeing her admire a reissue edition, Tamaki offers it to her, but she refuses it. He yells that it's for her. She doesn't really want it but reluctantly accepts it. As he gives it to her, their hands brush, causing his face to heat up. He flings it in the air and complains of his pounding heart, aching chest, and aching head. Honey asks whether he should call a doctor. Tamaki opens the door and says it's all right, but he's a pervert. He returns to his bed. His friends look on with concern, speculating hat the fever has gone to his head. Haruhi sees that he's dropped a framed picture and goes to pick it up. It's a picture of Tamaki's mother and Haruhi notes that as much as Michelle resembles her, Tamaki resembles her even more closely.

Shima returns and says there is tea prepared for them in the sitting room. Haruhi asks where Tamaki's father and grandmother are, since they ought to visit him, but is informed that his father is on a business trip and his grandmother would never visit the second residence, even if Tamaki were on his deathbed. Haruhi has a flashback of being cared for by her father when she was sick as a younger child. She has a conversation. Then, Tamaki’s father shows up, having temporarily left his business trip to check on his son. He watches his son sleep and notices the picture, which is resting under his hand and under the pillow. He wants his son to prove himself responsible by bargaining with his grandmother to see his mother. When he kisses his son on the head, Tamaki wakes up and asks whether doing so is perverted. His father says it's normal, his affection for Tamaki won’t change with his son's age, and he's proud to be a father.

Haruhi comes back in, saying she has to go, but forgot the prizes which Tamaki gave her. Tamaki's father happily recognizes her. Tamaki yanks her by the wrist and gives her a kiss on the head, saying it’s okay because he's her father. After recovering from the fever, Tamaki remembers none of what happened. The chapter concludes that Mori was the most hurt during the episode. It ends with him wondering whether he should have lied and said he had thought of kissing Honey, since on the one hand, he believes that Tamaki's fever got like that because of what he said, but on the other hand, lying is wrong. (“Should I tell Tamaki ‘I have thought of kissing Mitsukuni’? His fever got like that because of me… But lying is…”)
